Independent Beat Waves is an international event marking two significant anniversaries: the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States and the centenary of the beat poet Allen Ginsberg.
Taking place across several venues, including the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FLUL), Casa Fernando Pessoa, and Cinema Ideal, the program brings together poets, filmmakers, and scholars to engage critically with questions of freedom, democracy, education, and the role of the arts in contemporary society.
The event will feature Anne Waldman as poet guest of honor, alongside contributions from filmmakers Billy Woodberry and Alystyre Julian. Academic sessions will include a roundtable with national and international scholars, who will reflect on the future of high education. The program also includes film screenings, poetry reading and music performance.
Independent Beat Waves is organized by the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES/CEAUL) within the framework of the project American Studies Over_Seas: (Re)Imagining Shared Pasts, Bridging Ecological Temporalities with funding provided by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and American Corner, Portugal.
